Bringing the World Home

GOR-160-161 in room settingEat. Drink. Be merry. America is in love with food! Wall art feeds different styles and tastes as it compliments the interest and diversity of the consumer who has brought entertaining back into the home. As we set our tables to welcome friends and family, we also set our style through wall décor.

Where we eat and gather is the modern hearth of a home, a warm place that fills our senses. Kitchens and dining rooms should be a feast for all the senses—good food is best served on a gorgeous plate and in a beautiful room. Artwork allows us to decorate our spaces and share our interests with family and friends. Art selection is an extension of one’s identity; it helps to convey who we are and what is important to us. Like souvenirs, art we collect allows us to tell stories to other as we “travel in place”, bringing the world into our home.

POL-173-176Americans have always accepted the best the world has to offer and made it their own. In this sense we are America-the-Melting-Pot. In the kitchen and dining room, we are particularly comfortable adopting cultural influences to flavor our home. See Gorham’s use of abstract style and European imagery in GOR-160 and 161, or Poloson’s use of French text and still-life—they show how culture influences what happens in the kitchen.

Decorating in our homes, our hearth, can be broad and diverse. Culinary art trends for the home compliment dining accessories. Color trends and fashion tie it all together and make it relevant for the designer and consumer. Look for fresh, warm “living colors” to whet every appetite and to enliven kitchens and dining rooms – they are the new gathering places. Consumers can choose from a broad menu allowing them to set their own personal style.

Modern Africa

Swahili Stools and BasketsNature gives us rest and relief in a modern world. In the world of design we use nature’s infinite raw forms and colors to soften our manufactured lines and shapes to create a truly welcoming space. Our global reach now allows us to draw on all the wonderful forms nature has to offer, from places as near as our gardens or as exotic as the heart of Africa.

Our homes provide us a refuge from the stress and strain of the modern world—a place where we can rejuvenate, relax and refuel ourselves and families. We feel most at home when surrounded with meaning, sentiment, and beauty. Our space becomes a reflection of our lives and a way to share with others. Through our design and decor we express our interests, individuality, and communicate who we are. Global travel and an expanded understanding of a shrinking world provide us with more material than ever to express ourselves and share our ideas both through the familiar or the exotic.

KME-077Mahogany stools from Ghana based on traditional styles “appeal to the customer who is looking for items not distinctly ethnic, but more comfortable and stylish”, according to Papa Awori , store manager for Swahili in Eugene, Oregon1. Swahili has served the African design and decor market for over a decade, practicing Fair Trade2 principles and community building along the way. Papa has seen the expansion of their market beyond the typical masks and earth-tone items pioneered by the adventurous Baby Boomers returning from vacations abroad.  The younger buyers now are drawn to bolder patterns like Bogolon3 and Kuba4 cloth and have an interest in recycled goods, a mainstay of African crafts.  Just as nature and animal forms inspire local crafts people to create Bogolon  and Kuba cloth designs, consumers here are drawn to the ever-popular giraffe, elephant, and zebra for shapes, colors, and patterns.  Designers also look to the riches of Africa, bringing in a zebra throw pillow or rug to balance out the static lines of a modern space.  Whether it is floors, fabrics, or tabletop—Modern African Design is a perfect pairing of exotic and fresh.

MRN-060CSDecorative trends often begin with fabric fashions and exotic patterns in bright, new colors have been very active in clothing.  These trends naturally fit into the home and influence the patterns and color in home accessories.  For example, jewel-accented tabletop accessories made of natural materials and recycled glass add a tribal flair.  Oversized zebra patterned rugs in new colors take on African themes and form the core of a new designer look.

Swahili BasketsTwo years ago Gango Editions began development of the new global and tribal inspired trend.  Our artists started working with tribal patterns and animal patterns, combining them with abstract shapes and a contemporary color palette to create a whole new look.  The results are excellent for the emerging trend of Modern African Design and timed perfectly for the marketplace.  You see the results in MRN-60CS, 61CS and KME-77, 78 and many other images in our line.  Cheryl Martin created Playing with Patterns I & II (MRN) using a palette of burnished silver, grassy green, white linen, and black.  Martin illustrates a sense of the exotic in her use of a zebra skin pattern and flower while keeping it positively modern with her vibrant green, scroll, and silver.  Nature also inspired the modern composition from Kime, Spirit’s Tapestry I & II (KME).  This contemporary pair in natural, neutral tones depicts seed pods and leaves in contrast with abstract color blocks and circular elements at home in a modern space.

2 Fair Trade is a global movement advocating the payment of a fair price for goods thereby supporting local communities and preservation of environmental standards in the production of those goods.
3 Bogolon represents one of the mud cloth crafts and is know for its distinctive high-contrast patterns most commonly in black and white or brown and red.
4 Kuba cloth is a natural fabric made from raffia and bark often covered with distinctive patterns making it suitable for wall or table covers.

Distinct Groups

Our diverse range of customers demands a variety of design solutions every day. Whether you are a publisher, designer, framer, or retailer you know the needs of the marketplace and are changing every season as the population of our country changes, moves, and ages.

To meet the needs of a large population, Gango Editions has strategically planned for the Three-Generational customer base. Three distinct buying groups make up vast segments of the U.S. population: Baby Boomers (85 million), GenX’ers (50 million), and GenY’ers (76 million)1. Understanding the varied desires of these consumer groups allows companies to effectively deliver top-selling products to market. We note measurable differences between these groups in where, how, and what they buy2. Additionally, we see strong trends and advantages between the Baby Boom and their children, GenY or the Echo Boom3. While mom and dad are exploring Tuscany and fine wine, the kids are learning to work their way into the global economy.

Best Sellers

GOR-116-117You can see our generational response in all our work, even within the work of a single artist. Best selling artist Greg Gorham has found appeal among each generation through his rich interpretation of wine. Gango Editions’ best selling images, Chateau Vin and Villa Toscano, reflect traditional design and European influences from France and Italy. The Tuscan inspired spice to produce the strongest sales in recent years, worthy of an established trend supported by the massive Baby Boom. Thanks to the strength of the Tuscan trend, every generation has enjoyed growth in Tuscan style, food, wine, and travel. Each age group grasps this core trend and applies a twist to make it their own.

New Twist

GOR-160-161While Gorham has expertly met the interests of the Baby Boom with Tuscan wine imagery, he has also created the perfect interpretation of wine for GenX and GenY. Looking at wine with a more urban attitude we find a place for his work among modern art. Gorham fuses text, geometric shapes, and loose style in his youthful composition. Stronger colors in red, white, and black compliment the modern display. In a nod to their context, he brings in traditional fleur de lis and a splash of teal. From GenY to Baby Boom each will find the modernization of their interests irresistible.

Listening to the customer often means understanding the customer. The demographic forces in our market help us respond in a better way to the needs of the buyer. In the end, we bring together the Gango Editions Design Lab and our talented artists to supply the right art prints at the right time.

Dollarwise Decor

Designers and framers provide a fantastic value in a tight economy. In today’s climate, we are learning to make the most of the assets that work for us. How can we change a room without a substantial investment? Simple: change the mood of the entire room with new artwork. Visual arts have the power to change the ambiance of a room at a cost-effective price.

Our first collection (left) by Holland creates a contemporary setting. Neutral pallets are strong and growing in the marketplace. Warm browns with hints of blue-gray add strength to neutrals while strong contrasting black offers spherical accents. The organic texture in the color blocking adds a distinctive element to this collection. We see earth-inspired textures becoming increasingly popular as we conserve the beauty of our natural world.

Our second collection (right) allows the designer a totally different perspective. The same room takes on a traditional feel with a global twist.  We have selected artwork from best-selling artists Jeffery and Poloson. Rich spice color has lead the palette for several seasons and established itself as a durable color trend. Our rich textile-inspired patterns are found here in both artists’ collections. We see vessels widely used for tabletop accent and integrate that imagery into the artwork for a cohesive feel. Warm, rich colors and intricate detail in the artwork combine to create a global inspiration.

Ultrafresh Design

A trip to the coast inspires and rejuvenates us with a powerful blend of water, earth, sky, flora, and fauna.  Thankfully, we can transport this ultra fresh sense into our spaces through a coastal inspired interior design – whether we live on the coast or in the heartland. Two main trends are dominating the coastal look currently: a cool blue relaxing retreat, and a spicy festive Caribbean salsa.

Relax with Cool Blues

The relaxation and tranquility that cool blue and aqua hues inspire makes it easy to see why this color trend is so popular. This cool family of colors reminds us of water, one of the two major elements of the coast. Light blue tones pair beautifully with subtle creams and whites, to create a vast sense of serenity and calmness in any room.  With such a light background, exotic and modern accents from the lush life that surrounds coastal waters can be brought into the foreground.  These accents are rich in color and inspired by coastal foliage, birds, and nautical creatures.

Soak it up with Warm Spices

At the opposite end of the color spectrum, the coastal trend can also reside in the Spice Island color palette.  This coastal setting reflects the warm and inviting feel of the tropical sun.  Layer this backdrop with saucy warm accents, depicting the bright tropical colors that are popular from San Juan to San Diego.

Coastal is most importantly versatile.  Today’s coastal trend expresses both the lightheartedness of a day at the beach and the strength and solitude of a rocky coastline.  It can be hot and tropical or cool and organic—the coastal trend is as broad as our shore destinations.

Whether the palette is cool and serene or spicy and vibrant, it is evident that texture plays a large part in creating the perfect ambiance.  Richly textured elements and fabrics such as linen, weathered wood, distressed paint, and stone complete the coastal message of nature’s design.
